For siblings of people with disabilities, “Sibs”, much of our experience happens quietly. It unfolds internally, often without language, and frequently without recognition. Many Sibs learn early how to adapt, anticipate, and carry responsibility long before they are asked. Over time, these patterns don’t just shape behavior… they shape identity, relationships, and well-being.
When we invited Sibs to share their experiences, the responses were authentic, real, and consistent. As Sibs, we are carrying so much responsibility, burning out, and often struggling to ask for support.
Sib as a Human was created in direct response to siblings naming experiences that have long lived in the background of their lives. In our survey, 90% of respondents reported that being a sibling of a person with a disability has shaped or impacted their identity and overall well-being - with nearly three-quarters, 74.3%, saying the impact is profound (see graph below). This influence was not limited to childhood or caregiving moments; it extended into adult decision-making, relationships, mental health, and visions of the future. Today, 86% of respondents shared they deal with anxiety, some identifying with multiple mental health challenges. The data confirmed something many Sibs intuitively know but rarely hear reflected back: being a Sib leaves a lasting imprint.
